Help Shape the Future: Join Our Board of Directors

August 23, 2014 By mary.christensen Leave a Comment

You own a grocery store! Have you ever thought about it that way? You took a leap of faith and invested your money in Co-op Market Grocery & Deli. You built a vibrant new retail food co-op, the first one in Alaska.

As a Member-Owner, you can do more to ensure our success than just shop with us. You can help shape the future of Co-op Market and make sure we remain true to our values and mission as we continue to grow. You can serve on our Board of Directors.

Co-ops are not just businesses: They are democratic organizations governed by an elected Board of Directors made up of Member-Owners. Our nine-member board is the legal steward of the Co-op and fulfills the obligations of running a business. The board provides leadership, vision and guidance. It oversees wise use of Co-op resources and sets long-range goals.

Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. (Find out more about cooperative values and principles here.)

This year the board will be finalizing its board policies and Ends Statement and will begin to work with our General Manager to clarify our plan for growth and expansion.

Do you believe in the cooperative values and principles? Are you passionate about bringing good healthy food to the community? Do you want to help create a flourishing local economy with a real focus on sustainability? Do you have a background in business or volunteer organizations and relevant life experiences to share? You’re an ideal candidate!

Here are some things you need to know.

The Board of Directors

  • oversees the Co-op’s financial condition.
  • connects to our owners.
  • shapes our Co-op’s vision and works closely with our General Manager to set long-term strategies.

The Co-op Market board operates under the Carver Policy Governance Model.

To be eligible, candidates

  • must be Member-Owners of Co-op Market Grocery & Deli in good standing.
  • cannot be a Co-op Market employee.
  • must know how to focus, communicate clearly, and understand strategic thinking.
  • should have prior experience making decisions in a group setting.
  • must be able to undertake fiduciary responsibility on behalf of the Co-op and its owners.

Directors serve for a two-year term. For 2014/2015, four of the nine board seats are up for election.

The board meets monthly. Directors commit to an average of 4 to 8 hours of service per month, depending on committee and project workload. They also commit to attend yearly national cooperative training and conferences.

Applications are available here, or you can get a paper copy at the customer service desk. Completed applications, along with a current digital photograph, are due by September 5, 2014. (Your photograph should be a headshot only and in .jpg format.) All Member-Owners will receive candidate bios, photos and a ballot. On-line and paper ballot voting will begin on September 25. Winning candidates will be announced at our annual meeting on October 23.

For more information, please contact Board Chairman Robert Leach at board@coopmarket.org.

Outreach Committee Report by Mary Christensen – September 11, 2010

September 23, 2010 By mary.christensen Leave a Comment

Last June we started a series of meetings of the Communications/Outreach committee. At the time we had only $6,000 in the bank and now thanks to this effort, today, we have over $90,000 in membership equity dollars.

Those meetings launched an outreach effort that included two large events, last year’s first annual Harvest Fair and the 2nd annual Dessert Auction. The challenge put forth the to the Outreach committee was to raise membership equity dollars and to raise the funds necessary to pay for the outreach promotion expenses and our monthly office expense.

In September of 2009 we qualified to receive volunteer service through the Americorp VISTA program, an office was set up and Evan Daigneault began a year of service to Fairbanks Community Cooperative Market which we also call, Co-op Market. Evan led outreach efforts with our Partners in Business program. Now over 50 businesses have joined us in these efforts and many businesses have memberships in Co-op Market.

The biggest challenge has been raising the money to fund our outreach efforts. In October we started a Breakfast to raise funds the old fashioned way. Good food. Good conversation. Sometimes good music and good folks. Four breakfasts were held over the winter and over $4000 was raised.

In November we raised another $7000 at the second annual dessert auction. You may have also seen us at outreach booths at the Winter Show, a Women’s affair, the midnight Sun Festival, Golden Days and the fair. We also had a presence at numerous other events around town. Those events paid for themselves and gave yet another opportunity to build our membership base.

We would not be at this point were it not for the help of an army of “enthusiastic volunteers”. Some people have given us the generous “in-kind” donation of their valuable time and skills that have saved us thousands of dollars.

A few deserve mention here for going above and beyond the call of duty to help with this amazing effort. Sue Sprinkle, of 5th Ave. Design, has given us an enormous gift of an amazing logo, print advertisements, a brochure and a beautiful member letter. I extend my immense gratitude for this magnificent undertaking.

In January, two new members joined our ranks ready to share their considerable talent. Johanna Carson is responsible for the beautiful breakfast flyers you will see posted at our Member Loan table and for the advertisements for today’s event.

Paul Delys created a new look for our website and continues to assist us in improving and streamlining the site. My thanks to both of them for their considerable efforts on this project.

Helen and Mike McClean and Tom and Barbara Bradley have been our breakfast team. At each breakfast they arrived promptly at 8 am and within an hour a delicious breakfast of freshly ground whole wheat pancakes, potatoes and reindeer sausage appeared. To Helen, Mike, Tom and Barb thanks for all you have done to help us come this far.

There are other people to thank for the many tasks and they include Richard Seifert and Hans Geier for their unfailing efforts with the finance committee, Evan Daigneault for his work on the Sprout Fund and Member Loan campaign materials, Shaun Lott for her continued enthusiastic efforts, not the least of was to put together the wonderful event we have enjoyed today. Cora Kelley and Morgan Macchione for their work on the second annual dessert auction and Morgan for giving us the idea of the breakfast series. Sharon Alden for leading the charge with the Health and Wellness Committee and Leila Ryterski for always being ready to jump in and do stuff. Gary Toth for once again being the “sound” man and Jose Luis Martinez for hosting this afternoon Andrew Crow of University of Alaska Anchorage deserves special thanks for finding available funds for the upcoming trip to Fairbanks of a professional grocery store planner.

Finally, I especially want to thank our chairman, Robert Leach, for his compassionate leadership, his thoughtfulness and steadfast efforts on this journey. Robert has contributed countless hours to special projects such as the two beautiful fair booths. Mostly, he has been a tireless advocate for consensus building and problem solving and has helped us to get along well with his unfailing positive attitude. Thank you Rob.

There are numerous other volunteers who help out. I can’t list them here but you will find their names posted at the door. If I left anyone out please feel free to place your name there.

Here is how you can help! Attend our fundraisers. The next one is the 3nd annual Dessert Auction that will be held on November 20, 2010 at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge. Pat Fitzgerald and Robin Dale Ford will be the featured entertainment.

You can also join our efforts today by helping out with our, Each One Bring One Campaign. And we will reward you. When you bring one more person who becomes a member of Co-op Market You can activate the $7 gift certificate we passed out today. It is good anywhere you see our Co-op Market Mini Store. If all of us bring one more member we will have a community grocery store in no time.

Thank you for your time today.

Let’s Build a Fair Booth!

July 9, 2010 By mary.christensen Leave a Comment

It’s a gorgeous evening and even though I’m on the computer – at least I’m doing it from outdoors!

The fair is coming fast!!

Our next outreach meeting is going to focus on the fair and we hope you can come!

It will be held on Tuesday, July 13 at 6 pm at 2371 Hawthorne Ct. Bring a dish for dinner if you can! (I firmly believe that creativity starts with a full stomach!) Come anyway if you can’t. BONUS: If it is nice we will meet outside!

The good news is we have two volunteer chairs to help us make this event go smoothly. But, we need YOUR help too! Especially, we will need the help of those who want to help Robert construct and paint our fair booth.

  1. Robert Leach has a great “barn” design that may win us the “best booth for fair theme” again this year.
  2. Morgan Macchione will chair the committee to man the booth and with the goal of getting as much mileage out of it – to sell as many fundraising items and get the most new memberships possible.

Evan Daigneault is setting up fair volunteers with the following daily shifts:

  • Noon to 4
  • 4 to 7
  • 7 to 10

Call 457-1023 to set up your shift.

Volunteering at the fair has its rewards. You WILL get a ticket for the day you volunteer. Of course, for those who have season passes we appreciate it if you use them.

To make things run as smooth and productively as possible at the fair we will also hold a short, sweet and probably even FUN (45 minute) mandatory training for volunteers on August 3 at 2371 Hawthorne Ct.  And YES, even training has its rewards! There will be an AFTER training COOK OUT as well. It will be simple, Alaska grown but potentially a little gourmet and awesome. And for this event you won’t need to bring a thing. (For those who can’t make it on August 3 another training date will be set.)

Thank you in advance and have a great weekend!

August 4, 2009 By coopmarket 2 Comments

It’s time for the Tanana Valley Fair! The FCCM will have a booth in the Borealis Building for the duration of the fair: Aug 7-15, 12pm-10pm. This is a great opportunity to get the word out and raise funds for the Co-op. We are still in need of people to fill a variety of shifts in our booth. If you are willing to help with the booth at any time please e-mail Shaun Lott.

Five easy ways to help the market

June 12, 2009 By coopmarket Leave a Comment

You can help the market get on its feet, and it’s easy!

1. Forward this link. Forward the blog address, the website address, or the newsletter to a friend. Spreading the word about the market is one of the best ways to get more people involved.

2. Join our Facebook group. If you have a Facebook account, you can keep tabs on the latest news, participate in discussions, and see who else is involved with the market.

3. Join an FCCM committee. There are many ways you can use your expertise to help make the market a reality. The committees are: Business Plan Committee, Finance Committee, Store Design Committee, Vendor Selection Committee, Health & Wellness Education Committee, Operations Committee, Product Selection Committee, and the Communications/Outreach Committee.

4. Attend a board meeting. The next one is Thursday, June 25 at the old Foodland building at 6 pm.

5. Sit a table for the FCCM at your favorite festival. E-mail the Outreach Committee for more info.

HELP CREATE OUR FOOD CO-OP – JOIN A COMMITTEE

June 11, 2009 By mary.christensen 8 Comments

With a lofty goal of opening Fairbanks Community Cooperative Market (Co-op Market) by 2011 there are many tasks at hand. Committees have been formed and many need volunteers. Won’t you help it fly? You can volunteer a little of your time or a lot.

There are many small tasks to do so if you can sign up for even one small task it will be a blessing and you will enjoy the fruits of your labor as you shop our own little grocery store next summer.

To find out how you can best serve the Co-op Market e-mail info@fairbankscoop.org or call 457-1023. Or contact one of the committee chairs and let them know you want to participate in that committee.

Business Plan Committee – Board of Directors

This committee is central to the organization as it is organizing all the pieces that go into creating a good business plan. HOWEVER, the work of the other committees is absolutely necessary to putting together a good business plan. Tasks involved include:
1.    Putting together the estimates that come from the other committees into a formal business plan..
2.    Determining a final estimate of the funds necessary for the project before seeking funding

Finance Committee – Committee chair – Hans Geier  – Email: ffhtg@uaf.edu

This committee is responsible for developing sources of funding including:

  • Bank Loans
  • Grants
  • Member loan Program – The committee must research and form a legal structure for member loans.

Store Design – Committee Chair – Robert Leach – Email robertleach@alaska.net

Local Producers and Product Selection Committee – Chair –Cora Kelley – Email bearhug@gci.net

  • Identify potential vendors from the Tanana Valley and around Alaska
  • Create a member survey to be utilized in the blueprint of the Co-op Market
  • Determine criteria for product selection with a priority on local products when available

Health and Wellness Education – Chair – Sharon Alden – Email fwxsca@yahoo.com

Operations Committee – Chair –  Mary Christensen E-mail fccm2010@gmail.

The work of this committee is almost complete.

Communications/Outreach Committee – Chair – Mary Christensen Email themagiccarpet@gci.net or call 347-4463

  • Organize membership equity drive
  • Hold fundraising events
  • Advertisement and promotion
  • Communicate with membership on a regular basis
  • Website and blog updates
  • Responsible for annual meeting

The numerous activities involved with outreach require a lot of help. Many people already participate but we can always use more creative minds!
