truckload sale 44 window signs_Page_2 black border

It’s time for our 4th Annual Truckload Sale! Time to stock up and save up to 50% off when you buy by the case! Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 19th, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 20th.

We’ll be offering cases and bags of shelf-stable pantry stockers at significant discounts. Look for great deals on dozens of items, including sustainably caught canned tuna and salmon; organic grains, beans, dried fruits and nuts; coconut and olive oil – and much more. The list of items and pricing is available here.

We’re hoping to make this year’s sale a little easier to shop, so please look for the table marked “Start Here” for instructions and a tally sheet. We’d like for you to shop with the tally sheet in hand, marking down the quantity of items you want. We’ll load your purchases up while you do your regular grocery shopping and pay inside. This should save time for everyone.

We’re celebrating our 5th birthday, so please join us for a free hot dog or veggie dog from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and free cupcakes and ice cream from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

As if that’s not enough, we’re also celebrating Owner Appreciation Days! Now thru Sunday, Owners receive 10% off all regularly priced items on one entire shopping trip. (As always, the Owner discount excludes our already deeply discounted Co+op Basics and sale items. Although we don’t stack discounts, you always automatically receive the biggest available discount.)

Please note that all sales are good while supplies last. If there’s something on the list that you really want, please be sure to get here early. Many items sell out quickly, and we cannot offer rainchecks.

Alaska from Scratch Cookbook Signing May 12th

May 11, 2018 By Marketing Leave a Comment

Come to the co-op and meet Maya Wilson, Alaska food columnist and author of “The Alaska from Scratch Cookbook.” Maya will sign copies of her new book from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12.

This is her only Fairbanks event, so mark your calendars. It’s also Mother’s Day weekend and the perfect opportunity to get a lovely Alaskan gift for somebody special.

About the Author
In 2011 Maya moved from California to Alaska and launched the food blog Alaska from Scratch — a website dedicated to beautiful, approachable recipes for home cooks, along with frequent glimpses of Alaska’s unrivaled scenery and unique lifestyle. Since then, her site has grown to be Alaska’s premier food blog, reaching a global audience in the millions each year. Maya is also a chef and food columnist for the Anchorage Daily News and lives on the Kenai Peninsula with her family.

The Alaska from Scratch Cookbook is so much more than a collection of delicious recipes with gorgeous photos. This is a cookbook well worth reading and savoring, whether you ever intend to cook the dishes or not.

“Nothing about life is perfect, and food doesn’t need to be perfect either,” Maya writes. “Food shows up in the messiness of our daily lives, grounding and sustaining us through all the moments, whether mundane or celebratory or grief-stricken. Amid the noise and chaos of the daily grind, we should be able to come to rest at the table…. I want people to feel welcome, to kick their feet up, and to have the freedom to be themselves around my food.”

Cookbooks are available for purchase at the co-op. If you’ve already picked one up, be sure to bring it back on Saturday to have it signed.

Listening Sessions: You Can Help Us Plan for the Future

April 19, 2018 By Marketing 2 Comments

What do you value about your co-op? When you think about Co-op Market in five years, what do you envision? If you shop at the co-op, our board of directors and management want to hear from you.

Our doors have been open for five years now! Before that we spent six years preparing to open.

Since opening we’ve grown from $2.5 million to almost $4 million in annual sales.

We work with 52 local vendors and are looking for more.

We opened our doors because of you. More than 115 co-op Owners made loans to help us open, and more than 3,700 Owners have invested in our co-op through member equity.

We will be paying back loans for a few more years, so it isn’t quite time to begin planning for expansion. But now is the time for the board and management to start working on a five- to 10-year strategic plan.

Your input will help us hammer out our core values and craft a shared vision. You can help create the framework for making important decisions about our co-op’s future.

As part of its strategic planning process, the board is hosting a series of listening sessions. Please join us on one of the following dates for good food and conversation about the future of your co-op.

• Sunday, April 22, 5 to 8 p.m.
• Tuesday, June 5, 4 to 7 p.m. (Postponed. New date to be announced.)
• Tuesday, July 31, 1 to 4 p.m

All sessions will be held at JP Jones Community Development Center, 2400 Rickert Street.

For more information on the listening sessions and strategic planning process, please email Anduin McElroy, board chair, or Mary Christensen, general manager.

Everyone is welcome!

How Sharp Are Your Kitchen Knives?

May 17, 2017 By Marketing Leave a Comment

Has it been awhile since you had your knives sharpened? Every good chef knows you’re much less likely to cut yourself with a sharp knife than a dull one. And we can help you out.

We’ve invited Trevor Burns and Ryan Keener of Sharp Again to set up their sharpening station at the store from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20th, during our Truckload Sale.

Bring your kitchen and hunting knives (and scissors, too) and have them sharpened while you shop.

Knives are 90¢ per inch with a $5.50 minimum, and most scissors are $10. Trevor says they can handle almost all knives and scissors – including pinking shears. Most can be done on the spot, but a few may need to go back to their shop and be picked up later.

If this event is a hit, we’ll do it again this summer so you can be ready for filleting your salmon and skinning your moose.

May Ownership Drive: Help Us Grow!

May 4, 2015 By Marketing Leave a Comment

OwnItSliderWould you like to see a hot food item offered in the Deli? Want to see new products in the store? You can help us grow!

We’re holding an Ownership Drive throughout the month of May. Our goal? 110 new Owners and $25,000 in Owner equity.

The more people who join Co-op Market, the stronger we become! And your investment will enable us to make several much-anticipated improvements:

• A food warmer so the Deli can offer a hot item.
• New shelving in the Bulk Foods department.
• New shelves and carts for the Grocery Team so we can get stock out on the floor faster.
• New store fixtures so we can offer more products.
• A new endcap for bread.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming an Owner, now’s the time! Invest in May and receive your choice of a Co-op Market mug or a reusable shopping bag with our logo on it.

Already an Owner? You can help us, too, by paying off your investment balance. If you do this during our drive, you can also choose a mug or a bag.

Paid-up Owners should not feel left out! Bring in a new Owner and you’ll get $10 in Co-op Cash.

The week of May 16th thru May 23rd will be fun for everyone, with lots of samples and prizes, deals and even a Truckload Sale! We’ll be giving away another folding bicycle from Honest Tea and a garden wagon from Woodstock, as well as baskets of goodies from the store.

Stay tuned for more details!

Of course, mugs and prizes and sales aren’t the only reason to invest in your co-op. You also get the satisfaction of knowing that you own a grocery store. And not just any grocery store, but a true community business that is working to create a more sustainable local food system. Click here to learn more about the benefits of Co-op Market Ownership.

Key Ingredients: America by Food

September 5, 2014 By mary.christensen Leave a Comment

We’re pleased to announce that we’re partnering with UA Museum of the North and the Downtown Association to bring a free exhibit to UAF’s Community and Technical College this fall. Key Ingredients: America by Food was produced by the Smithsonian Institution as part of the Museum on Main Street initiative. It is touring the state thanks to a grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum. While in Fairbanks, the exhibit will feature local photos, recipes, stories and more.

Key Ingredients dovetails beautifully with Co-op Market’s emphasis on good, healthy, sustainable and local food. As Co-op owners and shoppers, you know and care more about the foods you eat than the average person. We’d like to tap into that knowledge and help build the story of food in Fairbanks. Do you have family recipes that use local ingredients? Do you have a special way with caribou or salmon or blueberries? Do you grow your own food, or wild harvest it, or hunt and fish for it? Please share your stories, recipes and photos with us! You’ll be adding key Fairbanks ingredients to the Smithsonian’s exhibit.

To learn more – and to share your Fairbanks food lore – click here.
