Owners: Help select our 2021 Lend a Hand recipients

December 11, 2020 By Marketing Leave a Comment

It’s time for our Owners to choose which local nonprofits receive our Lend a Hand register round-ups in 2021.

Twenty-eight nonprofits applied, and 12 of those have never received Lend a Hand donations. We invite our Owners to select 11 of them for our monthly register round-ups. (We reserve December for a giving tree and round-ups for the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living.)

Please review the applications linked below before completing the Lend a Hand selection survey. By request, we have arranged the list into two groups: nonprofits that received Lend a Hand donations in the past and those that have not. You can also see the number of years an organization has benefitted in parentheses. To view prior years’ totals, click here.

Click here to vote. As always, each Owner account is allowed only one vote, so please discuss your choices with others in your household before voting.

Our survey will remain open through December 24th. Please contact Kristin Summerlin, Marketing & Owner Services Manager, if you have any questions.

Masks required: No exceptions.

August 12, 2020 By Marketing Leave a Comment

Because we are responsible for keeping our employees and our community safe, we are not making any exceptions to our mask policy. Every person in the store who is older than five must wear a cloth or paper face mask that covers both mouth and nose at all times. People who are unwilling or unable to wear a mask, for any reason, cannot enter our store.

Please note that mesh masks are not acceptable, as they are completely ineffective at containing the virus. We reserve the right to ask customers to leave the store if they enter wearing an item obviously intended to undermine our policy.

We understand that there are many reasons why someone might refuse to wear a mask. For those who do refuse, we offer curbside shopping as a reasonable accommodation. If that option does not work for you, other stores offer a delivery service.

Our policy is based on advice from medical professionals in our community, as well as state and national health authorities. All of them agree that wearing a face mask is the simplest way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 when in public.

While our shoppers spend approximately 10-15 minutes in the store once or twice a week, our employees are exposed to hundreds of people every day. Some of our staff members are medically vulnerable, and some live with elderly or medically vulnerable family members. We will not endanger them. In addition, if the virus were to spread to our employees, it would be impossible for us to keep the co-op open for our community.

Thank you for wearing a mask. We appreciate your kindness. Most of all, we hope the virus can be brought under control until enough people are vaccinated – and then we can all meet each other face to face again and see each other smile.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Rich Rosenberg, General Manager, or members of our Board of Directors.

Update: Finding the Next General Manager for Our Co-op

July 21, 2020 By Marketing Leave a Comment

Hello Co-op Market Owners!

We have begun our search for the next person to lead our co-op into the future, and we wanted to update you on our progress. In this time of economic uncertainty and disruption, it is critical that we find the right person to help us navigate the chaos, maintain our financial strength and growth, and operate in accordance with our mission and values.

In May 2020, we promoted our retail support manager, Shaun Sims, to serve as our interim general manager. The board of directors then established a budget and timeline for our search and formed a search committee. To help us, we hired Carolee Colter, a consultant with extensive experience supporting co-op boards in hiring general managers. Carolee is a member of Columinate, the national consulting cooperative that helped us open our doors and operate successfully.

The search committee includes Rich Seifert, Art Gelvin, Brian Kassof and me. Because we value input from current staff about this critical hire, we also asked Amber Hernandez, the co-op’s bookkeeper and HR assistant, to serve on the committee. The final selection will be voted on by consensus by the full board of directors.

The first step in our search was to gather input from the Co-op Market board, the management team and staff. We conducted a survey to determine the qualifications and experiences we should seek in our next GM.

Based upon that feedback, we determined that our new general manager should possess these qualities and experiences:

1) Strategic Thinking
2) Business Planning and Financial Management Skills
3) Managing People, Team Building and Leading
4) Embrace of Co-op Values, Service Orientation, Integrity
5) Retail Grocery Experience

After finalizing the job description, we will advertise the position both locally and nationally. We will reach out to community organizations and other cooperatives. We’ll also publicize it on our website, on Facebook and Instagram, and through our newsletter. If you use social media, we hope you will share our announcement with your friends and colleagues.

We would like to hear any ideas you may have about possible candidates or places to send the announcement. Please feel free to contact the search committee with your questions and ideas.

In cooperation,
Chase Nelson, Search Committee Chair

Please help keep our employees and community safe. Mask up!

July 11, 2020 By Marketing Leave a Comment

Since late June, new COVID-19 cases have skyrocketed in Alaska and in our community. Public health authorities continue to recommend a combination of social distancing and wearing face coverings as the most effective way to prevent the spread of the virus.

Starting Monday, we will require all customers and guests to wear a face covering in our store. Whether a cloth or paper mask or a scarf or bandanna, the face covering must be worn at all times and must cover both the mouth and nose. The only exception is for children ages 5 and younger.

If you forget to bring your mask, we will provide one. Stop at the Customer Service desk before shopping. If you prefer not to wear a mask or have a medical condition that makes it impossible, we do offer reasonable accommodation by shopping for you through our Curbside Grocery Pickup program. There is no charge for this service.

Our employees have been required to wear masks while working since early April. We wear our masks to protect you, and your masks will help protect us.

While our shoppers generally spend 10-20 minutes in the store once a week, most of our 30 employees work in the store five days a week, eight hours a day. We currently serve between 300 and 375 customers every day. This represents a significant potential exposure to COVID-19 for our staff, and we are determined to do everything we can to keep them – and you – safe.

Thank you for the care and concern you’ve shown our employees as we’ve adjusted to the challenges of operating during a pandemic. Maintaining a safe, welcoming shopping environment continues to be our priority, and we are grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Shaun Sims, Interim General Manager, or members of our Board of Directors.

Black Lives Matter.

June 4, 2020 By Marketing Leave a Comment

Social Responsibility – We believe that our actions must benefit the global community at large. This means that we promote justice and equity in all of our relationships and are committed to the people who use and work for our business. – Co-op Market Statement of Values

Like all cooperatives, our store was founded upon the principles of equity, democracy, and concern for community. In envisioning our store as a force for good, we have encoded social responsibility into the statement of values that forms the framework for all of our decisions and actions.

If those principles and values are to be anything more than mere words, we cannot remain silent in the face of injustice.

We stand in solidarity with people in our community and across the nation who are mobilizing for justice in the murder of George Floyd. We must end the systemic, institutionalized racism that has brutalized countless black, indigenous, and people of color before him.

Fairbanks can seem very far removed from events that dominate the national news, but as we witnessed Saturday’s peaceful demonstration Downtown, we recognized that too many people in our own community are hurting. We grieve with them, but that is not enough.

We are donating $300 each to the Fairbanks chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and Native Movement, a local grassroots organization addressing critical issues facing our indigenous community.

However, money alone cannot solve such deep-rooted problems. As a food co-op, we know that in a just and equitable society, everyone has access to good, healthy food. We are committed to working with these groups and others to find meaningful, concrete ways to address food justice and food insecurity here, where we live. Our conversations with them are just beginning.

We also want to challenge our Owners and shoppers to take action.

Inherent to the cooperative business model is the concept of voting with your dollars. We challenge you to spend your money in a way that reflects your values: Support those businesses that build your community in a just and sustainable way, and actively support those that are black- and indigenous-owned.

We encourage you to donate your time and money, stay informed, and vote for officials who are dedicated to reform. Listen and learn. Together, we can achieve a more just, equitable, peaceful community.

How to Shop for Groceries During a Pandemic

April 29, 2020 By Marketing Leave a Comment

• Wash your hands frequently and properly.

• Take care of your own health – and don’t come into the store if you’re sick.

• Come by yourself if possible, so fewer people are in the store at once. If you must bring someone else, have that person wait in the car while you check out. We have limited the number of shoppers in the store to 10.

• Help us help our vulnerable community members by being mindful of when you shop. We’ve reserved 8 to 9 a.m. Monday thru Saturday for seniors and medically vulnerable people.

• We are wearing masks to protect you. We would appreciate it if you would wear a mask to protect us.

• Bring a shopping list. Make your visit quick and purposeful.

• Try to stay at least 6 feet away from anyone who isn’t in your immediate household. We’ve put down yellow floor stickers to help you visualize the distance.

• Don’t be offended if an employee steps back when you’re talking. We’re encouraging staff to practice safe social distancing, too.

• Touch items only if you intend to buy them.

• Bag your own groceries if you bring your own shopping bags. We’ve got tables set up along the front windows to give you room to do this.

• Buy only what you need so that your neighbors can get what they need, too. We have to limit purchase on some products, such as toilet paper.

• Be kind – to other shoppers, to our staff, and to yourself.

Updated Temporary Store Hours

April 27, 2020 By Marketing Leave a Comment

Now that business has returned to a more normal pace, we’re adjusting our store hours to better meet the needs of our shoppers. We will continue to reserve a shopping hour for seniors and medically vulnerable people, and we are maintaining a rigorous cleaning schedule. Effective today, our new hours are:

Monday thru Saturday
• 8 to 9 a.m. — reserved shopping hour for seniors/medically vulnerable people
• 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. — open to the general public

Sunday
10 a.m. to 7 p.m. — open to the general public

We no longer need to take a two-hour break midday for cleaning and stocking. We found that many people were confused by it, and we were turning lots of shoppers away.

We are continuing our heightened cleaning schedule throughout the day, and we’ll be closing one hour earlier to do more deep cleaning and stocking for the next day. In addition, we have contracted with a professional cleaning service to take care of the heavier work.

We are so grateful to our community. Your patience and loyalty have helped us make the changes necessary to keep our employees (and you) safe. Thank you!
